Writing a good paragraph is very primary in composing an article. Master it and you will be effective in communicating ideas or thoughts to the readers. The following are essential tips to writing a good paragraph:

Unity

A good paragraph must have one unified thought or idea. The topic sentence, usually found at the beginning of the paragraph (either the first, second or third sentence) will guide the readers to the main thought of the composition.

The rest of the sentences or details should contribute to one unified thought. Irrelevant ideas must, therefore, be avoided.

Coherence

A good paragraph must have well-connected parts and consistent sequence.

Modifiers must be placed in the right places, pronoun reference should be clear and parallel structure must be utilized to help your readers understand without a doubt what you really mean.

The ideas or details in your sentences must be related in order to build up a comprehensible paragraph, and contribute to clarity of idea.

Emphasis

Place your main ideas in emphatic positions. Usually, important details follow the topic sentence, and the least important thoughts are placed toward the end.

The rationale, readers will usually read the first few sentences to see what is in the whole paragraph.

Those who are in a hurry will no longer care to read the article until the last sentence.
