We launched the company’s updated website on 1 June 2013 and ever since it has been receiving consistent visitors daily.

In mid-July, the website is listed number 5 or 6 on the first page of Google search result pages for the keyword “infrastructure management”. It has remained in that rank as of writing.

Earlier this year I decided it was time to update my company’s web site. It had been a task on the to-do list for several years, as our previous site had been a static 4 page brochure type site.

I met Jonan Castillon of Online Writing Niche. Several discussions with Jonan showed that he understood what I was trying to achieve and was bringing a wide range of good ideas, and in depth knowledge into the mix to improve our internet presence.

Waugh Infrastructure Management is an expert and specialist niche consultancy – we work in the field of infrastructure management. Our skills are well known in New Zealand so most of our work comes from existing clients and client referrals.

Upgrading our website wasn’t particularly about winning work or generating revenue right now. It was more of a chance to share information we wanted to, maintain an internet presence, communicate effectively with current and future clients, and to build reputation and create future work opportunities.

Online Writing Niche produced our updated website, which included a blog.

Populating the Waugh Blog

On May 20th, I wrote my first post on our new website.

I set myself the goal of writing 2 blog posts per week to keep a level of interest in the site.

To achieve this I have kept a list of ideas, articles and links as I come across them so I always have a starting point for a blog post.

Sometimes I will blog on the ideas I have listed. Other times I read something that day then blog on it straight away.

Last week (22-26 July), I blogged every work day, which is a new milestone, and not a pace I think I can sustain.

A week before last week, I was at a series of seminars and didn’t blog at all – it was a very busy week.

So I started this week falling behind in my objectives, and wanting to blog some more. Monday, Tuesday blogs were produced. Wednesday – I nearly didn’t but decided I would.

Jonan then challenged me to do a blog post every day this week, and the challenge got the last 2 done, although blogging on Friday night after a busy week was a challenge.

My list of posts is great help. I have a good idea sitting and waiting, which I was able to choose, write quickly about it and with too much effort.

Blogging has been an adventure, and I am still learning all the time.

How the website is faring

You might ask, how has the web site been going.

Now at the end of July, and two months after we re-lunched the website I can say that it has massively exceeded my expectations.

We have had site visitors from 42 countries, with 312 from New Zealand our home market.

The site has had 3,788 page views, and 1939 visitors.

People are clearly following the blog posts. On Thursday (25 July), we had 22 visitors at one moment after publishing of the day’s post.

Jonan’s company has also put a lot of SEO work to the site.

On our core search term ‘infrastructure management’ after starting from scratch two months ago, we are now the number 5 listed site, on the top half of the first page of Google (google.co.nz) search result pages. This is without advertising or paying Google anything.

This is an outstanding result, and I am very happy.

For a small specialist company in a small niche, I think that these results are outstanding over a two month period, and I can put it down to a well-designed site, good content, and mostly to the blog.

That in itself is encouragement to keep the discipline of blogging regularly.

The investment I have made on my website over the past 4 months has achieved the best return on investment so far.

When I was still working at Central Philippine University, I would bring our 5-yr-old daughter to Kindergarten every 8:00 o’clock in the morning.

Each time we drove through Gate No. 8, I noticed an elderly couple sitting in front of their house gate. They were just sitting there and feeling the warmth of the early morning sun.

I know them. The husband was manager of a big government bank for a long time until his retirement.

In the Philippines, families are close knit and they don’t want to put their elderly in the hospice or elderly homes, even if they can afford.

Sad thing is, while it’s good they are living with their children with full support in terms of care, food, and medicines, most of the time their children aren’t there for them. They are busy with work and fending for their own family.

Imagine if you are in your retirement and twilight years at 60 to 100 years old, and you have established several blogs about your life?

I’m sure every day would never be a dull-moment because you have the whole World Wide Web reading your blog post of the day and interacting with you.

The web offers limitless opportunities for establishing links, forging friendships, and knowledge sharing. Your powerful access to it is the blog that you have created.

Some of my friends in social media commented that I’m always present on Facebook. Well, I won’t be hanging out at popular social media, like Facebook and Twitter if I am not getting good benefits from doing so.

Don’t you know that Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites are good income earners?

Facebook and Twitter are my foremost social media sites. Other effective social media sites are Stumbleupon, Digg, Google+, Reddit, LinkedIn and Pinterest that provides additional support to my online writing jobs.

So, how do I earn money from Facebook and Twitter? I know there are smarter and more technical ways of monetizing Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

These are just my simple way of gaining income from Facebook and social media.

I first realized the income potential of Facebook when I got a client who requested me to manage her account. She has a fitness gym business and she tasked me to post on all her friends’ wall promotions about her business. I also posted and scheduled tweets to promote a website or blog post.

Google Penguin Joins Google Panda Against Webspam

By now, everyone in the internet marketing world is aware of Google Penguin, the label of the latest changes in Google’s algorithm. This recent Google Algorithm changes was launched on 24 April 2012.

Web masters and SEO gurus see Google Penguin as extension of Google Panda. There are those who see it as two Google algorithm animals joining forces to topple web spam and promote high quality websites in search engine results.

With the 52 Google Penguin changes (or improvements), people in the internet marketing industry are keeping their search engine optimization “horses” at bay.

There is a need to retrospect and introspect all SEO actions done in the past to ensure that all, if not a large percentage of it is Google Penguin compliant.

Forewarnings of Google Penguin’s coming

Google has warned about “black hat webspam”, which they observe is being done every day. The scheme includes from stuffing contents with keywords unrelated to the topic to doing hidden links and building links with irrelevant sites or spam sites.

Site owners and SEO companies that have engaged in link buying schemes for the mere purpose of achieving high rank for their sites are Google’s target in the recent algorithm changes. Popular internet marketing experts keep the SEO people updated how Google Penguin is faring with regards to its algorithm purpose.

Thus, towards the end of April 2012, Google announced that they are launching algorithm changes that would combat webspam. It mentioned about sites having violated Google’s requirements for website quality, both in links and contents, will be slapped with decreased ranking.

According to Inside Search – the official Google Search blog, the latest changes in Google algorithm are not only to diminish webspam but most of all, to reward sites that have been committed to their quality guidelines. Google Penguin is designed to encourage high quality content to benefit browsers who are searching for good information.

Black Hat Webspam Techniques Undesirable to Google

Google has been battling webspam and other black hat SEO techniques that some individuals and companies are perpetuating to gain rankings in Google.

With Google Panda’s implementation in 2011, we have seen how many sites, some of them popular article directories, reformed their editorial policies and avoid becoming link farms.

Google Penguin is an improvement of Google’s on-going desire to clean the search engine world of those who might have passed through Google Panda’s filter.

Among these webspam practices that Google Penguin is trying to crack down are as follows:

  • Keyword stuffing is the practice of web content writers to fill up the copy with keywords which results to unintelligible text or contents. Often times the keywords are mentioned out of context. It could also be lists or paragraphs of keywords repeated all throughout the text.
  • Link schemes include link-building techniques that intend to manipulate PageRank. They are links built with irrelevant and questionable sites.
  • When there is so much reciprocal links and link exchanges, the sites could be penalized for unwarranted link schemes.
  • Termed as “money links”, links bought or sold that passes PageRank are considered as link scheming.
  • Cloaking is a practice wherein a website presents different content or URL to browsers and search engines.
  • Google considers sites using sneaky JavaScript redirects in violation of their Webmaster Guidelines because it shows different content for users while redirecting search engines to a different one.
  • There are sites that create doorway pages and use it to rank for a particular keyword or phrase. They may be made within the domain or constructed on separate domains. The main purpose is to redirect readers to a single destination.
  • Duplicate content refers to bulk of text within the site that is a complete copy of existing content. It also refers to similarly matched contents among sites.

Google Webmaster Tools offer detailed explanation on how to resolve these issues presented here. It also details how a particular site can be corrected and be compliant with existing webmaster guidelines, particularly with Google Penguin.

Whenever I meet people and they would ask me, “What keeps you busy these days Jonan?”

I would smile and reply, “I blog about my life.”

Then my answer would spark a conversation on blogging, what I blog about, why blogs are important and how I do it.

This post answers some of the basic questions about blogs.

What are blogs and why are they important?

The word “blog” is a combination of the word “web log”, which is simply similar to your journal or diary, except that it is written and published through the web.

In today’s era of the World Wide Web, it is important that you are able to establish your online presence through a blog.

Having a blog allows you to freely express your opinion about your expertise, politics, or current events. Your blog will enable you to feature your hobbies and interests, such as travels, food, pets and collections through online writing.

Isn’t it wonderful that besides your office-to-home routine and weekend activities, you have your own home in the web where you can blog about your life?

Also, having your own blog opens you to many opportunities in the web to connect with other people, oftentimes, with similar interests or topics that you are blogging about.

Furthermore, when you are blogging about your expertise and experiences, you will become source of authority in the World Wide Web. You will be surprised that soon you find yourself getting invitations for consultancy about your expertise, guest blogging, online writing, and blog mentoring.

The Joy of Knowing that My Blogs have Gained PageRank

Gaining PageRank from Google is perhaps one of the best achievements that a search engine optimizer could attain.

PageRank is Google’s system of gauging the value or importance of your site. It is named after Larry Page, the founder of Google. PageRank is a Google trademark, which process is patented officially in the US Patent Office.

Search Engine Land explains that “PageRank is Google’s system of counting link votes and determining which pages are most important based on them. These scores are then used along with many other things to determine if a page will rank well in a search.”

Despite the fact that Google had removed PageRank in its Google Web Master Tools interface to encourage bloggers and webmasters to focus on other factors that qualify a site, PageRank has remained as a primary website quality indicator.

PageRank or PR rating ranges between 0 to 10; and PR 10 as the highest. Google and Facebook have perfect PR10 each, while Twitter has PR9.

When I started my first blog, “From Worry to Glory” in September 2009, I don’t have any idea about SEO writing nor about PR. What was in my mind then is to publish my writings through my blog.

Then I created “Online Writing Niche” in July 2010 with the thought of achieving PageRank for it. At that time I already knew about the importance of PR.

After ten months without any development, I told myself that gaining PR is only for those who have the knowledge and expertise in blogging and search engine optimization.

Then in June 2011, I was quite elated to see that my blogs, “From Worry to Glory” and “Online Writing Niche” earned a PR.

“From Worry to Glory”, which is a motivational and inspirational blog, got PR1 after one year and nine months.

“Online Writing Niche”, which is a blog on Internet marketing, gained PR2 after ten months.
