In late August 2010, I had the privilege of working online with a web-design, SEO company based in Christchurch. I worked with a good Christchurch guy named Cameron. We call him Cam.
He recruited me through Upwork (formerly oDesk) portal. I wrote web contents and did search engine optimisation on his online store and several client websites.
I built links through article writing and submission, blogging and social media bookmarking.
After gaining good SEO results for the websites I’m working on, Cam also asked me to help him with recruiting and managing online workers.
Here are three factors that helped build our trusting one another:
- Commitment – You are serious about the agreed work hours and getting the tasks done.
- Honesty – It’s being truthful in your work and being clear about what you can and you cannot do.
- Quality Work – Excellent work is preferred and willingness to achieve beyond expectation.
My online work with Cam could have continued for more than six months. Later, I got a full-time long-term online contract from another Upwork client so I have to resign.
My wife whom I’ve trained and was working with me on Cam’s online tasks continued the job.
In November 2011, my family migrated to New Zealand, we stayed in Auckland. Looking for work, I contacted Cam and asked for help.
He offered me a job, the same tasks that I was doing while in the Philippines, in his company, eNow Limited.
My deep gratitude for Cam’s confidence in my writing and SEO skills and his sincerity to help me.
My family will never forget the kindness Cam extended us when we were starting settling here in New Zealand.
Yes, my first job in New Zealand started from a virtual job through Upwork and it opened further opportunities for me and my wife.
Now, I’m working on my OWN (Online Writing Niche) company.
Nevertheless, Cam and I have become good friends.
